Master Chef

Welcome to the semi finals of Master Chef 2016, our contestants are Annabelle, Jess and Emma. One will go home and 2 will be in the grand final. Join after the break.

Day 1
Contestant Annabelle Jones headed into the kitchen. She was making a delicious pizza topped with some honey scented ham and a runny tasty cheese.

The judges waiting at the table thought that the dishes falavours would mix beuitifully.  Hopefully they were right.

In the kitchen the heat was rising. Annabelle was rushing round the kitchen, trying to get the pizza cooked with a mere 5 minutes left. Sweat dripped down her shiny face. Grabbing the pizza out of the oven she took one glance at them. They looked good. Sliding them on to the chopping board she carefully sliced them in 1/4's. She plated the dishes up and one by one bought them out to the waiting judges. Thoughted raced through her mind. Did they like it. They took a bite, then another. A big grin broke over the judges faces.

Now for the criteria: judge Holly thought the topping was delicious, but next time maybe try put more colour in it.

Day 2
Contestant Jess strolled into the dreaded kitchen. Earlier she had planned to cooked some Ravioli with a tomato sauce. Jess has made this dish plenty of time at her home, was feeling confident.

She opened the fridge and pulled out the ravioli. Her heart sunk. The ravioli was broken in pieces. As the race for ingredients finished, she had already finished cooking the pasta. Jess was getting quite stressed. She had never experianced this amount of stress. Beats of sweat form on her face.

The judges, Holly and Emma went into the kitchen to help her finish. 5,4,3,2,1 Step away from your kitchens. Standing back the view there master piece. Emma and Holly handed each of the judges a plate. And carefully took one them self. Sitting down judge Holly took a small mouthful. Chewing it carefully, trying to savour the amazing falavours.

When all if them had finished the talked amount them self. Deciding that the presentation skills needed some work, but the flavours where heaven.

Day 3
On the last day Contestant Emma wasnt nervous at all. She had been practising for this dish for ages. Strolling around grabbing ingredients. She calmly mixed the sauce together. She was going to make Chicken Fettuccine.
After a long a tedious cooking the chicken had finally finished. She started to plate up and make it look beautiful. She walked out of the kitchen with more than 15 minutes to go.

The judges were impressed with the quality of the food and thought that the presentation was amazing.
With all of the judges votes counted they thought the best dish had a great texture, with a nice creamy      topping. The winning dish was . . . . . . .  Annabelle's Pizza!

After the break we will see the bottom 2 contestants fight it out for the remaining place in the final of 2016 Master Chef!

Omaka camp ground

While visiting beautiful Christchurch stay at our unique Omaka scout camp, set amongst a welcoming atmosphere of tall elegant trees,naturally  landscaped grounds and a stunning backdrop from the mountains and dense bush.
Omaka is a Scout camping ground that is utilized by the scouting community through out the Canterbury area. Groups regularly use Omaka for camping, meetings and one off events. Though Omaka is a Scout Camping Ground it is open to community groups, schools and private groups for a range of purposes by bookings only.
We offer a range of quality, affordable options including a cabin, tent sites and marae style in our big lodge. The cabin includes 3 bunks (6 beds) and lots of wonderful floor space. If you decide to try our marae style sleeping, bring your sleeping bags and lay them out on the soft carpet. Lie down and have a relaxing snooze. We have plenty of spaces where you can pitch your tent on our lovely green grass.
Our camp has clean and hygienic toilets and showers. As well as our newly built toilet and shower block. In our main building we have a large spacious kitchen and an attaching dining hall that can also be used as a sleeping room.
Bring your kids as we have an Obstacle course where your kids can run, jump and swing around. If your family has had a stressful day get out the tubes and float calmly down the river. If that's not enough you can always take a peaceful walk around our beautiful camp ground.

My speech is about communication. I choose this topic because I like to talk. I started off by getting all my ideas and then deleting some until I had a manageable amount. I hope you like it!

Book Review: Splintered

This book is about a young girl, who like all females in her family is cursed, with the ability to talk to plants and insects. Because of this her her mother in now in a metal institution. Alyssa is now worried that she may one day end up in there to. The curse and the family's curse having a connection to the Alice and Wonderland story. Alyssa ends up getting more tangled into their family's curse that she realizes that she must go down the rabbit hole just like Alice did all those years ago.
Alyssa is a bit of a tom boy, she like skateboarding. Her life long companion and crush, Jeb is currently dating a girl named Taelor. Taelor is always teasing Alyssa for there family's apparent insanity.

Alyssa does everything that she can to not end up in the institution like her mother and gran-mother, including trying not to look like her. Alyssa currently goes to the institution every week to visit her mother. On her last visit there it starts normally, but Alyssa accidentally her mother the she is crazy to. This leads to her mother to go crazy, and shortly after she get sedated.

Alyssa starts doing some researching into her family's history. She starts hearing a familiar voice in her head, from her childhood. Saying that she needs to go down the rabbit hole, to fix Alice's mistakes. She believes that it must be in London. In the process of getting a fake passport, Jeb some how finds out about what she done. Jeb and Alyssa get into a fight, but Jeb only thinks she is trying to go to London and doesn't know about any of her strange curse. Jeb storms off to got to the prom with Taelor. Alyssa listens to that voice some more and finds out how open the portal to Wonderland. After the fight with Jeb, she is starting to wish that he was here. At that wish he appears.

They find the rabbit hole and fly all the way down. They nibble cake to shrink. They meet lots of kinds of unfriendly creatures, that ain't like how Alice's said. Once the dry up all Alice's tears. They find their way to the mysterious Morpheus, the voice in her head. Alyssa is charmed by his mystery, but Jeb immediately hates him. Alyssa remembers all of her childhood time with Morpheus. She can't decide who she like more the protective Jeb or the mysterious Morpheus. . .

High Ropes

On Friday the 3rd all the year 8s went to the Groynes in Christchurch. High ropes is one of the activities in the WPCA challenge.

I had Emma and Jess in my car. When we pulled into the Groynes we had a bit of trouble trying to fund the High ropes course area. We drove in and followed Pip Bartlett. We ended up going right past the turn off. When we got to the roundabout we turned around and eventually found the entrance.

Sprinting, sprinting, sprinting, FLYING!
The breath was sucked out of my lungs, I flew up, round and round. Gravity. Gravity no longer existed. I hang there, suspended in mid air. No one could get me now. I was invincible! Swinging back and forward, I looked down.

A hundred feet down Miss Hanna was relaxing on her soft and comfy rug. She was waving her arms up and down. This was when I thought I had lost it. I hang there, hopelessly trying to snap myself out of my day dream. Then. Suddenly, I realised. My arms were spread out wide, like a hawk gliding through the night sky. Laughing to myself, I realised that Miss Hanna was just coping me!

The air blew on my face as I was lowered slowly to the ground. I stood there, standing on solid ground and a huge smile on my face!

Clubs

Last week we started clubs. Every Friday afternoon we go to the club that we chose to participate, I chose Coding and Robotics.
Last Friday it was our first session. We got in groups. I went with Noah, Emma, Harry and Guy.
I decided to go to Coding because I can already do some HTML and Java script. Emma and I are going to the only girls.

I expected that we would do some scratch and guess what.... We did! I did the proper scratch and everyone else is doing scratch junior.
I am creating a shooting game, were you hover your mouse over the screen and when you press the space the machine gun fires. The point of the game is to shoot down as many balloons as you can. I am going to try get a scoring method to come on the screen.

I am going to keep updating this as I progress.

School: Cross country

Bang!
Sprinting off, my heart was leaping out of my chest. Would I beat Piper or not? The question was racing round head. I was quite surprised as I was running beside Holly, suddenly Holly sped up. Falling a little behind her.  After completing the first lap I was well ahead of everyone except Holly. As the hill came nearer and nearer I started to wish that I hard practised more. Taking short, sharp strides, I power up the rise. With every step I am closer to the finish. As I reach the top of the hill all I  can see is a big paddock. I run down the first straight. Round the far corner. Round the next. Suddenly I am aproching the hill, this I get to run down down it! As I fly down the hill, picking up momentum, I trip, catching myself before I would eventually tumble to the bottom of the hill. When I start the long, sheltered forest. This is my favourite part of the run! Running out of the forest, round the next lap. The finish line is in sight. I sprint. My legs are going on fast forward. There's no stopping. Done! I had finished in 2nd place!

Anzac Presentation

For four weeks we have been researching about our topic that we chose. Annabelle and I decided to look at the food aspect. We researched about what food they ate and their cooking facilities. Mt. Richardson

On Friday the 13th of May we started the treacherous climb to the summit of Mt. Richardson.

Walking through the gates. Swinging them open, I take my first step onto the hard grey concrete. Walking slowly towards a big rectangular building. "Holly!". Jess comes running up. Now snapped out of my day dream I walk into the Mt. Thomas room.

Swinging my bag onto my back, we start to walk. Me, Emma and Annabelle were walking together. Up and Up we climbed. Round every corner up every hill.
Josh Dando was coming with us, he used to be in my sisters class and Loburn. He manly walked with Jack, Hugh and EB. When ever Miss Hanna looked over her shoulder, he would quickly stop whatever he was doing and try to look like a responsible adult. Even though he was probably playing with giant worms or spiky plants!

We were almost at the top. Suddenly a mad dash to reach the top started. I joined in! I reached the top in about 5th place. We stopped there for 10mins. Annabelle and I used our jackets to fly off a big pile of rocks we found. It was fun even though we only travelled about 3 metres!

On the way back it was really steep in some parts. Me and Emma walked together for most off it. Every 10minutes we would come up to a small hill, so annoying! Me and Emma jumped down the hill for most of the time! There were a few branches that had fallen down in the big winds. We climbed over them as quickly as possible, so we could finish earlier.

When we finished the walk, Emma, Annabelle and I rolled down the hill. Jess thought it was to kiddish and thought that she was mature enough that we shouldn't be rolling down the hill, Boo hoo we still rolled our way to the bottom!!!

Hockey

On Saturday the 14th of May we played at Marist. Our game was against Hornby.
At the start Janelle and Dan asked me if I wanted to play as a half. I normally play as right inner but being a half seemed like something different so I said yes.

Whistle . . . . . . . . . .    Game started! Abby passed back yo Haylley and Haylley smacked it down the field. Their ball. The dribbled it down the field and passed it to a player on our circle. I ran over to them, squared my shoulders, lowered my stick to the ground and charged right into them. The impact ran up my stick. They stepped back trying to get possession of the ball. I got the ball and smacked it to the side of the field.

By half time we were one goal up, 1-0. If we won this game, it would be our first game we won!

In the next half they started with the ball. Haylley ran out trying to intercept their first pass. No luck, but as the person with started to dribble towards our goal Phoebe was ready. She tackled hard and came out with the ball. Passing it to Haylley. Haylley dribbled through all their players, strikes at goal, it rebounded off the goalies pads.

In the end of the game it was 1 all , not a win for us but maybe next we will come off in the lead!

Rabbits

Yesterday after I got back from cross country I raced out to the rabbits. . .

My does Ginger and Shadow are due to have babies. Ginger is a broken fawn and Shadow in a solid black. I put them with one of my bucks Blue, he is a BEW, blue eyed white. Shadow lost her first litter but hopeful these one will survive.

16/5/16
In the morning before school I ran out to check Ginger and Shadow, no babies but Ginger was carrying hay around in her mouth. A good sign! I kept giving her hay until i realised she was eating it all.
Shadow had formed a nest but had put no fur in it.

18/5/16
Cross country today! I check the rabbits and Ginger is pulling her fur out. Hopefully tonight!
After school my dad says " how many babies do you have"! For starters I thought he just meant for me to check., but as I came out to see I relizied that he was serious. Opening the lid there was a small bundle of white fur. Carfully I pecked in, there laid 5 pink wrinkly babie rabbits. They looked like naked mole rats!

I think that they will all be BEW's.

Buddy!

This weekend I have been very bored so i decided to write a bit about my animals. 
My youngest animal at the moment is Buddy.

A bit about him:
Buddy is a cross-bred goat. He is really adorable and kind. He will always run up to you and jump around wanting to play with. Some of my friends when he showed this behavior thought that he was trying to be vicious a quickly left the paddock. But because is still very young he is just burning off all that kid energy, just like a puppy!

How I got him and his early childhood:
We used to have 2 adult goats, Chocolate and Star. They were about 5 or 6 years old. We decided to put them in kid. We brought them over to Jodie and Richards place, (my brothers friends parents), They have a whole herd of them that go's all over there property. They are very friendly and really lucky to live a wildish life. Our goats coming from a 10 acre property thought it was luxury. You can imagine what the learned, Jumping and this very peculiar stunt that we saw when we were there. There was a barn with a fence coming off it. The goats came trotting up to the barn wall, ran right up the wall flipped their body over the fence, practically doing a backwards flip! And landed on the other side of the fence and just trotter away as if this was  their daily routine! They stayed there for a few months. In December they were ready to kid. Our first doe Chocolate had to go to the vet and get surgery, but sadly we lost her and her 2 newborn kids. Then our second doe Star was having trouble having her kid so we rang our neighbour, she a vet, she helped delivery Buddy, my cute goat. He was about 14 cm long and his ears were about 9 cm, they looked so silly on him, he looked like a clown. Luckily his ears haven't grown at all, now he has nice NORMALLY ears! Unfortunately we had to put Star down. We lost our 2 wonderful does, and we weren't sure if if buddy would survive. He was so small and delicate.  We kept him inside for his first month and a bit of his life. That night we tried to bottle feed him. He would not take to the bottle. We thought we would surly lose him. Finally for the 100th time we opened up his mouth a put the teet in his mouth . . .
He drank and drank. Yay! When he was about 2 weeks old he had only grown about 1/2 cm. I would take him outside and put him on the lawn to play. He would hobble around and try to run, but he would end up on the ground! Maa'ing and maa'ing. One of his favourite games is jump on the person, if your lying down reading a book he runs up jumps up and lands on your back with THUD! He then lifts his front legs and looks down at you, it's if he saying 'shame,  the king of the castle and your the dirty rascal'! 

Now he is 5 months old and is living in the paddock with our lambs from last year. He is about 40 cm long and about 50 cm tall.

PAL's

Last term 10 students got selected to become PALs, PALs stands for Physical Activity leaders. We went to Ashley school to participate in a PAL's leaders day. We played lots of leadership games, such as this soccer one where we played 6 v 6. There were always 2 of us referring each match. Then he stopped us and we had to come up with some new rules to improve the game, we came up with having it just 4 v 4, so the filed wasn't so crowded, another one was that we couldn't have goalies, this was because the fields were quite small and the goal boxes were only about a meter wide. After having gone to the leaders day I think we could all now take a group of little kids and be able to play controlled games.

Now we have established the PAL's program you might have seem that on every Tuesday and Wednesday 2 PAL’s have been out on the back field organizing and playing games.  
If you want to come and play the games we have organised, feel free to join in.  
Some of the games we have run so far are: Killer ball, Rob the nest and using the parachute.

Last week Annabelle and I did our 3rd session of PAL's with the juniors. We played lots of different games like Cat and Mouse, Cops and Robbers, Duck Duck Goose. I am really enjoying being a PAL and I am looking forward to playing more games with the seniors and juniors next time and the times afterwards. 

I strongly recommend that if your school isn't already doing the PAL's program that you should encourage them to give it a go. It give students that might not have very many friends or like t be alone to do at morning tea and lunch time, they can interact with others in there class and school.

Unwind, by Neal Shusterman

During class we have been doing silent reading.  Derrin and I are reading Unwind, by Neal Shusterman. I have read up to page 33 so far. I am enjoying his book because it has a lot of different concepts. I will proberbly read it again in year 9 because this book in social study's. I diffenatly recommend this book to other readers.

Review: I love this app! It's very entertaining. I use it in emails and are looking forward to adding it to my texts when i get a phone. It make life a little bit more FUN!

Book review, Tangi




Tangi is the first novel of Witi Ihimaera's that I've read and I found it extremely hard to read, while at the same time, I enjoyed every minute of it.  It's not a difficult read, and actually is repetitive throughout. But it has an almost hypnotic quality.  The book itself weaves two strands: the return of Tama to his home after his father's death, and Tama dealing with his father's death after it has happened.  Maybe there are even more strands in there.  I think it's this quality that makes the repetition interesting, rather than boring. It's a hugely emotional book, and made me pretty sad at times.  Not many books cause me to express such emotions.  It took me about 1 day to read, but it was worth every page.

Rifle Shooting

This term I have been going to Small Bore Rifle Shooting. We have been shooting with wooden polished guns, my gun that I use is gun 11. My first score was 69.1 and my highest is 82. I have been going for a whole term now and I feel like I have improved lots since I first started. The old guys said that if I shoot in the eighty 3 times in a row I can shoot in a sling.
Each time I go I normally see Holly M and Johnluke. Me and Holly started at the same time and Johnluke started rifle shooting last year for his hobby for William Pike. I will keep updating this post as the year progress's.

Kaiapoi - Rangiora Fun Run/Walk

On 13th of March I completed the Lions Fun Run!

As Emma and I walked through the gate we tried to be inconspicuous. Black tops surrounded us. Head down, we walked. After going about 5m Riely and Hayato came running over. Great job of being inconspicuous!

As part of our William Pike Challenge we have to compete in a 10km organised Fun/Run. The Lions Fun/Run was 12km. I somehow always end up competing in the longer and more challenging things!
I walked with Emma at the start and then Brooklyn. We ran 4 power poles and then walked 1-2 power poles, this way we didn't get tired and kept up our energy. Trust me you need all the energy you can get. 12km doesn't sound like much, but when you are halfway through, it feels like 12 miles!
The first few kms went past in a blur. Emma slowly fell back, and I ended up running with Brooklyn. We kept telling ourselves "One foot in front of the other", and " Almost there". As we ran past the 10km mark, the marshal told us that it was only "20 minutes to go". I highly doubt that because we only had 2kms to go. Before I new it the finishing line was in sight! I never liked the sight of the taped finish shoot more than this before!
Brooklyn and I crossed the line together, with the classic, holding hands and reaching them up to the sky! American movies! We both completed the Lions Fun/Run in a time of 1hr 19minutes. Pretty impressive for a 12km run/walk!

The prize giving took so long, as everybody had already left. Even though they had all left, no-one from loburn school got a spot prize. So disappointing!

I really enjoyed doing it and are definitely going to do it next year!

William Pike Challenge Award (WPCA)

As some of you may have noticed, I use the phrase "William Pike Challenge" or "WPCA" quite often.
The William Pike Challenge is all about getting students my age into the outdoors.

Sausage sizzle

On Saturday the 19th Jess and I did the Rotary BBQ.

I arrived at New World just as Jess and Arizona were going into the super market to collect the sausages and bread. I ran in after them.

Rakahuri Rage

On Sunday the 20th of March all the year 8s drove down to the Rangiora race course to compete in the Rakahuri Rage.

We load my bike on the back of my mums car. Filling up drink bottles and packing food was finally done and we were ready to go. As we were driving down lehmans road on the left side there were hundreds and hundreds of cars. We drove in and parked in the car park.
The loburn tent was choc-a-packed. I parked my bike and collected my teams bag. None of my team were there! "Hurry up Jess and Emma" I thought. Finally they arrived. We each got a drink bottle, some swim pass's and cafe vouches.
"Time for the briefing" aloud voice boomed off the speaker. We all hurried off to listen.
I was the first biker. I sat on my bike in the crowd of other bikers. They were all wearing fancy biking suits. The ones you see the professionals wear, the tight, tog like materiel body suits. Proper biking shoes that clip into the pedals. I felt well out of my depth. 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 GO! They sped off! leaving me in there dust. I biked fast dying to keep up with them. My first mistake. After 10 minutes in was puffed. Being the first biker in my team I had to complete an extra 2.5k. It was all in the open. Finally I entered the bumpy, but shaded track through the forest. Going from there was easy. Up and down. I was biking up one of the hills round the start of the forest track and a biker came up behind me and rear ended me. I fell off and looks around to see who had ride into me, but they were no where to be seen.
Finally I came up the last hill and could see all the hundreds of tents. I biked along the grass getting closer and closer to my drink bottle. Finally I passed over the timing mat. I biked round the tents to the loburn tent where Emma was waiting to bike. I raced round the corner and came to a sudden stop, tagged Emma and walked over a plonked myself down. There was sweat dripping down my face. My time was 32 minutes.
The rest of the day went by in a blur. On one of my laps I accidentally took Benj's bike. I looks the exact same as mine. So our team didn't get counted for that lap.
There was this one lady that I know who I passed on the side of the track with a punctured tire. A man was helping her. Then about 5 minutes later she passed me and then she turn the corner to go down a hill she fell off and tumbled down the hill. She got back on a kept biking. There team ended up winning the family division.
I think the day went well and I would definitely do it again. Maybe when I'm a bit older though!

Rakahuri Rage Practice

After hurrying out of the house and dropping Lucy at tennis, we drove down the road and looked about us. No one was in sight. To early, or to late! We drove a little further and, bam! They were all there, waiting for a few more of us straggler to arrive. The car-park was fell hidden from the road!
We parked up and headed of to meet the others. Emma had found a big, black scorched mark on the gravel. Bits and bobs of different parts of the car that once stood there, just lay, half buried in the gravel. A box of matches that were crumpled up had been thrown on the ground. Someone had burnt a car!
